Early Spring

Amazing early spring, ice is gone from lakes in mid March, and several 70 degree days have made it look and feel like May! Magnolias, apricots, hellebores are all in bloom as of March 26. On March 24, I saw one plant of Carex pensylvanica in flower, but only pistillate or female flowers were out. Cool season grasses have started to grow and most lawns are green, but not yet ready to be cut. Time to cutback grasses like the miscanthus shown at left, behind the Northern Sun forsythia.
