Grass Burning

Giant miscanthus would not burn without cutting and massing the bamboo-like stems together on May 23, 2013. Shown here is the cut mound being burned. This large (10 feet tall before cutting) grass is surrounded by mowed cool season grasses, and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum crew was careful to manage the burn by burning this area last.Note the protective clothing and how the crew moves back as the heat builds.
